Thoughts on Veteran's Day

More years ago than I care to admit, I raised my hand and stated this:

I, Charles E. Petit, having been appointed a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter, so help me God.

Nowhere in there does an officer make any pledge of fealty to any particular office or person—which is why I believe that "Veteran's Day" should be Election Day.

Have a thoughtful Veteran's Day. While you're at it, think about the long, black wall (Real Audio clip) northwest of the Reflecting Pool.
